OUR IMPACT

We have helped thousands of disadvantaged and vulnerable South Australians in the North and Mid-North since our creation to access justice. Our team is passionate about improving access to justice for those in need and we are committed to the highest standard of legal assistance.

We came about as the Para Districts Community Legal Service in 1989 with a Steering Committee of local service providers who recognised the need for a Community Legal Service in the northern suburbs, sponsored by the then Norwood Community Legal Service.

The Service was established in 1990 with State funding and in the following year was expanded with funding from the Commonwealth. The CLC operated from the Little Para House in Elizabeth Vale, generously provided by the Salisbury Council.

In 1995 the CLC took on a Financial Counselling Program, a much needed Service, funded by the Commonwealth Department of Families and Community Services.

A review of Community Legal Services in SA commenced in 1997, implemented in 2000.  Funding for the metropolitan Centres was reassigned, resulting in a significant increase in funding for the northern suburbs together with the relocation of the Child Support Program.  The CLC was also fortunate in securing funding for an Employment Advocacy Program from the Employment Ombudsman.

The Para Districts Community Legal Service changed its name to Northern Community Legal Service, a recommendation of the review.

The Community Legal Service is extremely grateful to the Attorneys General both Commonwealth and State for their belief and commitment to the CLC, for supporting the Community Legal Service in the northern suburbs and its extended service into the country regions.
